New LDE Liaison Officer Space Peter Batenburg

In order to strengthen cooperation in the field of space and space-related knowledge exchange and education, liaison officer Ir. Peter Batenburg (Aerospace alumnus from TU Delft) was recruited this summer for Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Space and Space Campus Noordwijk.

With this position Space Campus Noordwijk and Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities (the strategic alliance of Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam), aim to bridge the gap between knowledge and the application of knowledge, and to bridge the (future) questions from industry and society and the way in which the talents of the future are prepared to answer these questions.

Peter Batenburg - LDE Liaison Space Officer

"80% of the Dutch space sector is located in Zuid Holland, with the icing on the cake being ESA ESTEC; the largest ESA center with knowledge in all areas of space and also the SBIC and the Galileo Reference Centre. All inseparable parts of Space Campus Noordwijk. Together with aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology and Astronomy at Leiden University, as well as in the field of Space Law, the Netherlands has earned a strong international reputation in space technology and research. Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus university) has strong ties with ESA ESTEC on technology transfer and is very complementary to Leiden en Delft. I see my role as successful if we succeed in working out concrete initiatives and in building a literal and figurative bridge between various relevant parties in which the Space Campus will serve as a stimulator and meeting place", says Peter Batenburg.

The individual LDE universities are already working closely and successfully together on various themes around Space and partly also together with ESA ESTEC. We want to further elaborate on this by creating concrete content, emphatically in cooperation with ESTEC and Space Campus and ultimately also in relation to the broader network.

The role of the Liaison Officer Space is to establish a jointly formulated ambition and a concretisation of the cooperation in the field of Space, together with the people who are active within the three universities in the field of Space (or Space related matters) and together with Space Campus Noordwijk (including ESA ESTEC, the technical heart of ESA), in which on certain aspects the broader Space network is also involved.

The LDE Space steering committee consists of prof. dr. Wim van den Doel (Dean Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities), prof. dr. Daan Stam (Dean at Rotterdam School of Management), prof. dr. Henri Werij (Dean of Aerospace Engineering Delft), prof. dr. Michiel Kreutzer (Dean and professor at University Leiden) Dr. Ing. Franco Ongaro (Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality, Head of ESTEC Establishment ESA) and mr. Esther Peters (Director of Space Campus Noordwijk).
